Calculate VAT

Standard VAT Rates

  • UK: 20% (standard), 5% (reduced), 0% (zero-rated)
  • EU: 15-27% (varies by country)
  • UAE: 5%
  • Tip: Select "Gross" if you have the price with VAT already included

How the VAT Calculator Works

The VAT calculator adds VAT to a net price or removes VAT from a gross price. It helps compare before-tax and after-tax amounts for purchases, invoices and pricing checks.

Formula

VAT amount = net price x VAT rate / 100. Gross price = net price + VAT amount. VAT inside a gross price = gross price x rate / (100 + rate).

Example

With a 20% VAT rate, a 100 net price becomes 120 gross. For a gross price of 120, the included VAT amount is 20.

Limitations

VAT can depend on location, product type, reverse-charge rules and exemptions. Use this as a calculation aid, not a tax ruling.

How to use the result responsibly

  1. Check that every input uses the unit and time period shown beside the field.
  2. Compare the result with the worked example and formula above.
  3. For financial, tax, health, or legal decisions, confirm current rules with a qualified professional or the relevant authority.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is VAT removal not just subtracting the rate?

Because the gross amount already includes VAT. You divide by 100 plus the rate to recover the original net value.

Can the rate be changed?

Yes. Enter the rate that applies to your country, product or service before calculating.
