Weighted Grade Points per Course
How the High School GPA Calculator Works
Add each course you have taken with its letter grade, credit hours, and level. The calculator converts each letter grade to grade points on a 4.0 scale, adds a bonus for honors or AP/IB courses when calculating the weighted GPA, and averages everything by credit hours to produce both your unweighted and weighted GPA.
Formula
Unweighted GPA = sum of (grade points x credit hours) / sum of credit hours, using a standard 4.0 scale. Weighted GPA adds 0.5 points for honors courses and 1.0 point for AP or IB courses before averaging.
Example
An A in an AP class (4.0 + 1.0 = 5.0) combined with a B in a regular class (3.0) across equal 1-credit courses gives a weighted GPA of 4.0, while the unweighted GPA for the same two courses is 3.5.
Limitations
GPA scales and weighting bonuses vary by school district, so always confirm your school's exact grading scale and weighting policy. This calculator uses a common 4.0 scale with standard honors and AP/IB bonuses as a general-purpose estimate.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?
Unweighted GPA treats every class the same regardless of difficulty, capping at 4.0. Weighted GPA gives extra credit for honors, AP, or IB classes, so it can exceed 4.0.
How can I raise my GPA?
Since GPA is a credit-weighted average, higher grades in courses with more credit hours have the biggest impact, and taking weighted courses can raise your weighted GPA even with a B grade.
