How the AP Calc AB Score Calculator Works

This calculator estimates a composite AP Calculus AB score from your multiple-choice and free-response results. The exam is weighted 50% multiple-choice and 50% free-response, and College Board converts the combined raw score into a 1-5 AP score using a curve that is set after each exam administration.

Formula

Composite score (0-100 scale) = (multiple-choice correct / 45 x 50) + (free-response points / 54 x 50). The composite is then compared against typical historical score-band thresholds to estimate the final AP score of 1 to 5.

Example

Getting 34 of 45 multiple-choice questions correct and 40 of 54 free-response points gives a composite of about 74.5, which typically lands in the AP score of 5 range.

Limitations

College Board sets the exact AP score cutoffs after each exam based on that year's difficulty, so real cutoffs shift slightly from year to year. This calculator uses typical historical thresholds and should be treated as an estimate, not an official score.

How to use the result responsibly

  1. Check that every input uses the unit and time period shown beside the field.
  2. Compare the result with the worked example and formula above.
  3. For financial, tax, health, or legal decisions, confirm current rules with a qualified professional or the relevant authority.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a penalty for guessing on AP Calc AB?

No. AP exams are scored on the number of correct answers only, so it is always better to guess than to leave a multiple-choice question blank.

How is the AP Calc AB exam weighted?

The exam is 50% multiple-choice (45 questions) and 50% free-response (6 questions worth 9 points each, for 54 total points).

Does this give my official AP score?

No. Only College Board issues official AP scores after grading free-response answers and applying that year's curve. This tool gives a study-planning estimate.
